Population boom around Calgary: Who's growing the fastest?
Calgary's population is exploding, but it's not alone. New data from Statistics Canada reveals a fascinating trend in the region's growth. While Calgary's population surge is impressive, with an increase of over 250,000 residents in just four years, there's an even more intriguing story in its neighboring cities.
Here's the breakdown: From 2021 to 2025, Alberta's population grew by a staggering 600,000 people. Calgary, the province's flagship city, accounted for a significant portion of this growth. But, just north of Calgary, Airdrie stole the spotlight with the largest population gain in the region, adding over 15,000 new residents to its community.
And this is where it gets interesting: Airdrie's growth rate is a testament to its appeal. But, it's not the only city experiencing an influx. Chestermere and Cochrane also welcomed thousands of new residents, with increases of 8,666 and 6,102, respectively. These numbers are no small feat!
But here's where it gets controversial: Smaller towns like Banff, Okotoks, and Strathmore also saw notable growth, challenging the notion that only larger cities attract new residents. Banff, with its scenic beauty, increased by almost 3,000 residents, while Okotoks and Strathmore, offering a more suburban lifestyle, grew by over 2,000 and 1,500, respectively.
Even Edmonton, the northern neighbor, saw a substantial increase of nearly 190,000 people, proving that the entire province is experiencing a demographic shift.
The data raises questions: What's driving people to these areas? Is it job opportunities, quality of life, or something else entirely? And what does this mean for the future development of these cities?
